Visible stems and branches

Season, rooting, support, combinations, and clashes all affect how strongly an element is expressed.

When a bar shows zero

The element does not appear at this surface layer. Hidden stems and pillar relationships may still bring it into the wider pattern.

Balance is about relationship

Read how the elements generate, control, and carry one another instead of aiming for an equal 20% in every bar.

Boundary times need extra care

If the recorded time is close to 11 p.m. or a solar-term transition, small differences in time or convention may change a pillar. Check the original birth record when possible.
